Summer Club 2001

A Journey Through Music

The Summer Club is an annual event run every morning for a complete week at the beginning of August. All Primary School children are welcome to join in the fun and laughter.

This year's theme, "A Journey Through Music", started by looking at the different rhythms and styles of music from Israel, Africa, Europe and America. This follows the spread of Christianity throughout the world and we sang choruses from many of these countries.

An average of 50 children started the morning by singing fun, action songs, then learning a new song to fit the theme. We tried out different instruments; looked at how they produce music and what sort of sounds they make. We looked at instruments mentioned in the Bible and, where possible, tried to play them

The children then divided into their four groups according to age. Bells, Maracas, Cymbals and Drums. These groups spent the morning playing games, making instruments in the craft room, and doing other musical activities. They also attempted to do an Israeli dance, an African dance, a Greek dance and an American Line dance!

Peter and the Wolf appeared on video, on CD and in the form of puppets.

Each day, one of the groups had a very successful visit to The Music Room in Alford Place, travelling by coach. Here they had a great time trying to play instruments and learning how to make music.

We finished the morning by getting back together for a sing, a chat and a competition, which usually involved a water pistol!

The fun continued over the weekend, with races, games and a chance to see a video of themselves on the Saturday; then leading the morning worship in church on the Sunday.

The 50 children went away with happy memories, songs playing in their heads and a unique musical instrument made by themselves.
The 30 helpers all went away tired, songs buzzing in their heads and some of them a little wet, BUT all having had a great time with a lovely bunch of children.
