THE ROOF FELL IN ! The collapse of part of the hall ceiling has brought about the postponement of yet another fundraising event for Ferryhill Beyond 2000. The Murder Mystery Meal planned for October 27th has been rescheduled for 16th March 2002. Meanwhile, on sale in the Foyer and Coffee Shop is a selection of fridge magnets depicting some of the stained glass windows and a view of the Church. At the lowly price of £1.30 each, or £6 for a set of five, these should make fine little gifts, something to bear in mind with Christmas approaching. Also, don't forget "Showers of Blessings", the ideal present for a Ferryhill exile. We have already got underway with plans for the Christmas Fair on 8th December - more info. next month. Fundraising has continued all summer with a variety of sales and events bringing in a total of £1560.35. Well done everyone! Keep it up and let Hazel Braynion know of any fund-raising ideas that occur to you.

OLDER PEOPLE’S WEEK  may have a meaningless title (even a baby is older than a younger baby) but we know what it is about, and a lot of us are eligible for the programme of events arranged between 7th and 13th October.  An interdenominational service to celebrate Age will be held in Holburn West Church at 6.30pm on Sunday 7th October.  The preacher will be the Very Revd Dr James Simpson.

JANE AND SOPHIE DARLING completed the 11 miles of Christian Aid’s “Walk the Line” and raised £329.  Congratulations to them and thanks to congregation members who sponsored them.  The grand total for the event is likely to exceed £2000.

PRAISE THE LORD TOGETHER!  This event in the Music Hall on Wednesday 10th October will include popular hymns, dance and drama.  The UDI Aberdeen City Band will provide the music.  Gwen and David Haggart will host the evening which is being held to raise funds for a chaplaincy at the new Children’s Hospital.  Tickets at the Box Office or direct from Margaret Barclay.

ARCHIE Bear is the mascot of the new Children's Hospital

Rev Ian Dick
Message for the Month

The Revd Norman Nicoll begins his 18 month Probationary Period at Ferryhill on 1st October. Norman was awarded a B.D. (Hons) degree in July and before becoming a candidate for the ministry was a Quantity Surveyor. During his time at Christ's College he had attachments at Dyce and Queens Cross Parish Churches and at the Chaplaincy at the Royal Cornhill Hospital.
This next stage in Norman's progress towards ordination is a vital one and, like me, I am sure you will want to make it a stimulating, enriching and enjoyable experience for him because the congregation has a crucial part to play alongside the supervising minister. The aim of the Probationary Period is to ensure that the probationer minister receives the best possible training, and is given ample opportunity to receive constructive criticism, and to reflect on the relationship between his theological education and parish life. The Probationary Period provides a first taste of the full-time ministry, an opportunity to get to know a congregation well, and the challenge of fulfilling the probationer minister's calling.
Parish life is very different from university life, and time is needed to adjust. Every probationer makes mistakes; so we all need to be patient and understanding, offering words of encouragement rather than criticism. Please also understand that if I ask Norman to visit you at home or in hospital, or to conduct a funeral, this does not mean that as your minister I am not interested in you. These are important areas of work for the probationer to experience before going on to his own parish and are therefore areas in which you can contribute directly towards his training.
