The Christmas Fair

exceeded all expectations. A total of just over £3,200 was raised. Thanks go to all who helped to bring about this success, not least the local businesses who advertised the Fair for us. Special mention must be made of the donations from Buchan Catering, Millburn Street Post Office, Brunswick Stores, Trinity Hair Stylists and various anonymous donors. Hazel Braynion says: "We cannot give enough praise to the volunteers who worked so hard on the day of the Fair. December 8th was not just about making money for Ferryhill Beyond 2000 - it was about camaraderie and fun and, most of all, commitment ". The Silent Auction which was pencilled in for February has been postponed so the next date for your diary is the Murder Mystery Meal on 16th March. Tickets at £15 will go on sale later this month.

MEANWHILE, there has been a 40% response to the recent appeal for help in repaying the loan incurred in Phase 2 of the development programme. Thanks to all who have supported it. It is still not too late to respond. It would also be helpful if those who do not wish to contribute would return the donation form ticked appropriately. Only one member has done this so far!
PROCEEDS from the Indoor Carboot Sale of Saturday 10th November were £317, while £140 was raised in the Coffee Shop. The same evening donations at the Three Brass Bands Concert organised by Alan Haggart amounted to £171, so the Ferryhill beyond 2000 Appeal benefited by £628 that day. Thanks go to all who contributed. More generosity was in evidence at Christmas when our special collections raised £978 to support Regent Trust's work with the city's homeless people.
OLDER MEMBERS will remember Revd Lester Nickless, the minister from Colorado who took part in a summer exchange in the 70s and conducted worship in both Ferryhill churches. In a card received at Christmas by the Shearers he and his wife enclosed a cheque for Ferryhill Beyond 2000. They are still very interested in all our news and would like to make a return visit, but as they are well into their 80s this is not likely. They send the congregation their good wishes.

Rev Ian Dick

Message for the Month

By Revd Ian Dick

Dear Friends,

Another year has gone and we are all another year older if not wiser and, after the festive season, perhaps a little heavier too! As well as acquiring a few (?) extra pounds, one of the burdens of age can be the weight of gravitas, that solemn demeanour which we are supposed to adopt in accordance with our age. We are expected to act our age. Yet Jesus suggests that we need to retain a certain child-likeness otherwise we shall fail to see what he and life is all about. A list of such childlike characteristics might include: complete trust, dependent love, natural openness, eager expectation. Here's a wee story that I think also illustrates what it is to retain a child-like enthusiasm for life, which is surely also what Jesus was getting at.

The little cruise ship was crowded with people, many of them retired, all of them off for three days of pleasure. Ahead of me in the carpeted passageway was a tiny woman in brown polyester slacks, her shoulders hunched, her white hair cut in a short, straight bob. From the ship's intercom came a familiar tune - "Begin the Beguine," by Artie Shaw. And suddenly, a wonderful thing happened. The woman, unaware that anyone was behind her, began to shimmy and shake. She snapped her fingers. She swivelled her hips. She did a quick and graceful Lindy step-back, shuffle, slide. Then, as she reached the door to the dining salon, she paused, assembled her dignity, and stepped soberly through. She became a hunched old lady again.
That visual fragment has returned to mind many times. I think of it now as I reach another birthday - and an age where most people would not believe that I still shimmy, too. Younger people think folks of my years are beyond music, romance, dancing, or dreams. They see us as age has shaped us: camouflaged by wrinkles, with thick waists and greying hair. They don't see all the other people who live inside. We present a certain face to the world because custom indicates it. We are the wise old codgers, the dignified matrons. We have no leeway to act our other selves - or use our other selves.

Maybe, like the woman in the story, we need to express our 'other selves' more often especially if they reveal a child-like enthusiasm that has not been dimmed by age and which shows that we still get a kick out of life.

Yours,

P.S. Many thanks to all those who sent cards and greetings at Christmas and the New Year - these were greatly appreciated.
