CHRISTIAN AID WEEK begins on Sunday 13th May. This year we get the week off to a great start with a performance in the church of THE FEAST OF LIFE. This musical by Garth Hewitt may not be so famous as "Les Miserables" or "Phantom of the Opera", but since it was written for Christian Aid a few years ago it has been performed thousands of times in churches throughout the UK. Garth Hewitt is one of Britain's most accomplished Christian song-writers, and uses THE FEAST OF LIFE to press home a message we all need to hear. Bring your friends to this unique service at 6.00pm on Sunday 13th May. On Friday 18th May Colin Hunter and his friends return to present another concert of popular classical music. The proceeds will go to Christian Aid.

FROM TUESDAY 1ST MAY "Children 2000" tokens will appear in every issue of the Evening Express. The members of our Sunday Gang hope you will cut these out and save them. Once you have collected an envelope's worth bring them along to the church and in due course the Sunday Gang will be in a position to apply for a donation from the newspaper. Also, don't forget that our Summer Club needs more volunteer helpers. To find out more come to a meeting in the Hall at 7.30pm on Thursday 24th May.

VISITING FRIENDS THIS SUMMER? Take them a copy of "Showers of Blessings", the history of Ferryhill and its churches. It continues to attract favourable comment. "You don't have to be a Ferryhiller to find this story fascinating …", "…. I like the way it links events in Aberdeen, and Ferryhill in particular, with events in the wider world…", "…the text is backed up with a plethora of excellent photographs". The book is on sale at the Church price £9.95.

A Parable for Christian Aid Season

caid2.gif (1405 bytes)

Once upon a time there was a class
and the students expressed disapproval of their teacher.
Why should they be concerned
with global interdependency, global problems
and what others of the world were thinking, feeling and doing?
And the teacher said she had a dream in which
she saw one of her students fifty years from today.
The student was angry and said,
'Why did I learn so much detail about the past and the administration of my country and so little about the world?'
He was angry because no one told him that as an adult he would be faced almost daily with problems of a global interdependent nature,
be they problems of peace, security, quality of life, food, inflation,
or scarcity of natural resources.
The angry student found he was the victim
as well as the beneficiary.
'Why was I not warned?
Why was I not better educated?
Why did my teachers not tell me
about the problems and help me understand
I was a member of an interdependent human race?'
With even greater anger the student shouted,
'You helped me extend
my hands with incredible machines,
my eyes with telescopes and microscopes,
my ears with telephones, radios, and sonar,
my brain with computers,
but you did not help me extend
my heart, love, concern
to the entire human family.
You, teacher, gave me half a loaf!'
