Ferryhill Parish Church wins an Eco-Congregation Award

We have been trying to be an Eco-Congregation for a while now.  Last Autumn we submitted a report to Eco-Congregation Scotland (the office in Edinburgh) detailing our efforts on several fronts.  In January a team of assessors came to visit our church buildings and met some of our “green team” who showed them around and talked about what we are doing.

We are delighted that the assessors recommended that we should receive the Eco-Congregation Award, a handsome hand carved plaque made from recycled wood, that will be on display.  The award only lasts for 3 years, so we have to continue to make progress, not sit back and do nothing else!

We were particularly commended for the following:

  • The excellent activities of the Sunday Club and Summer Club
  • The fabric improvements which where practical have included energy efficient systems (CH boilers, advanced controls, thermostatic valves)
  • The team approach to spreading the word through the congregation and community so that a wide variety of people of all ages have been able to contribute to environmentally sound and sustainable practices
  • Fair Trade activities

They also made recommendations to seek advice on energy use within our buildings.  Because the buildings are used for so many activities, we naturally have a high energy consumption.  We hope those of you who use our premises will support us in our endeavours to be “eco-friendly” and all of you will  try to spread the word and do what you can in your own lives.

Award Presentation Rev JHA Dick accepts the award from Mr Donald Brown (Convenor of Aberdeen Presbytery's Property Committee)
